Death has once more visited our vicinity this taking for its victim one of our pioneer residents, Frank Benyshek Sr., who departed this life Monday last, May 12, and was buried the day following. The deceased was born in Bohemia, Europe about the year 1819, from there he embarked for America about 35 years ago where he settled in Manitowoc County Wisconsin, where he lived for about 18 years when he removed to this county, of which he was a dutiful citizen up to his departure which is mourned by a great number of relatives and friends as was demonstrated by them, when about 60 teams followed his remains to their last resting place. He was buried in the catholic cemetery at this place. - [S39] Cuba Daylight Newspaper, Anna (Benysek) Gulick (Reliability: 0), 20 Jan 1916 Page 1.
Anna Gulick was born in the couty of Tabor in Bohemia on December 24, 1830 and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs Frank Havel in this city on January 14th, 1916, at the age of 85 years and 20 days. She was united in marriage to Frank Benyshek in May 1854. Her husband died in 1890. Together they came to America in 1855 and settled in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. In 1873 they came to Republic County, Kansas and resided two and a half miles southeast of Cuba where she lived until 1904 when she came to this city and spent her remaining days at the home of her daughter. To this union nine children were born, five boys: Joseph, Frank, James, Anton and Stephen; and four daughters: Tracy, Kate, Rose and Emma. All of which survive with the exception of Rose, who passed away in 1908. The funeral services were held at the Catholic Church in this city on Sunday , January 16th at 11:30 o'clock. Conducted by father Schaffer. Interment was made in the Catholic Cemetery. She leaves to mourn her loss one sister, Mrs. Lomas, who lives in Wisconsin; eight children, fifty grandchildren, thirty-four great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Her death was not unexpected as she had been sick for some time, but the passing of a person who was so well liked among those who knew her, cannot help but bring grief to the many persons who were neighbors and life long friends of the deceased. The extend their heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family in their hour of saddness.
