- [S37] Salina Journal, Joe H. Hugos (Reliability: 0), 28 Jan 1937.
Joe H. Hugos was born Oct. 15 1852. He departed this life Jan. 19, 1937 at the age of 85 years, 3 months and 4 days. At the age of 17 years Grandpa Hugos came to America from Trondhpem, Norway, in 1869, coming direct to Wisconsin, making his home there for four years. At the age of 21 years, in 1873, he came to Norway, residing with his parents on their homestead one half mile, east and one and one-half miles north, until he homesteaded the adjoining farm, where he suffered all the hardships of a pioneer. In the fall of 1877 he purchased the farm of his late residence and on Oct. 25, 1881 he united in marriage with Caroline Erickson, and to this union were born three children, who live to mourn the loss of a kind and loving father. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith, and was a charter member of the Norway Lutheran Church. For over a period of 50 years he served as a deacon of the congregation. Five weeks prior to his death he had the misfortune of falling in Norway. At first his condition was quite hopeful, but as time, passed his illness became serious and all that medical aid and loving hands could do could not restore his health and as life ebbed out he was steadfastly leaning on the promises of his Great Redeemer as he often expressed his sentiment in the comforting Scripture, "Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest." His life and character was a living example of true Christianity, and his sterling qualities were exemplified in his sympathetic kindness to his fellow man. In the golden chain of friendship another link Has fallen away, and may we ever think of Grandpa Hugos life as a beloved inspiration to a higher and brighter life here on earth and a Home everlasting. He leaves to mourn his loss Ida 0. Morton, Omaha, Nebr., Adolph B. Hugos, Enid, Okla., Carl J. Hugos, Scandia, also eight grandchildren. The funeral was held at the home and at the Norway Lutheran Church on Friday, January 22. Interment was made in the Lutheran cemetery. Rev. T. 0. Torgeson officiated.
