John Egnac Kerstine was born in Gudenz, West Prussia, on February 18, 1845 and passed away at his home in Belleville on North ‘M’ street July 12, 1935, at the age of 90 years, 4 months and 24 days. He came to the United States with his parents in 1869 and they established a homestead in Freedom township. Republic county, Kansas. Later he went to St. Joseph, Missouri where he worked until 1871 when he returned to Kansas settling on his father’s original homestead in Freedom township seven miles northwest of Belleville, where he lived until 1924 when he moved to Belleville with his family. In 1875 he was united in marriage to Anna Levendofsky and to this union were born 1 daughter and 5 sons: John of Omaha, Nebr., Joseph, Henry, Anton G., and Frank A., of Belleville. The daughter died in infancy. The wife and mother passed away May 5, 1888. In 1890 he was united in marriage to Mary Tarkowski and to this union were born 4 sons and 5 daughters, three dying in infancy. He was a kind and loving husband and a devoted father. He was always willing to help others and was loved and esteemed by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed in the home as well as in the community. Those who mourn his departure besides his wife are the sons and daughters, John and Raymond of Omaha, Nebr; Mrs. Clara Colling Joseph, Henry, Anton G., Frank A., and Edward of Belleville, Mrs. Josephine Houdek, Rose and Walter of the home and a half-brother Pete Kerstine of Belpre, Kansas. He also leaves 8 grandchildren besides a host of other relatives and friends. He was buried from St. Edwards Catholic church on Monday morning at 9:30 o’clock. Rev. Father McKenna officiating at the funeral services. His eight sons were pallbearers. Interment was made Tiago cemetery. Out-of-town relatives and friends present were: Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Kerstine and daughter Joan Lee and Mr. John Kerstine of Omaha, Nebr? Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gaza of Prairie View, Kansas; Mr. Gaza and daughter. Mrs. Francis Kirschner and children; Father Barring and mother of Esbon. Kansas; Miss Mary Stoehr and Mrs. Clementtine Miller and children of Marysville, Kansas.
