Mrs. John Novak passed away at her home in the east part of town on the fourth of April after a long and painful illness. Mary Shipek was born in Bohemia on October 14th, 1849 and passed to her reward on the fourth of April, 1927 at the age of seventy seven years and five months. After she had grown to womanhood she immigrated with her father to America where after a short stay in the East they made their home at Belleville. She was married to John Novak October 16, 1877 and to this union nine children were born, two of whom with her husband preceded her to the grave. Mrs. Novak was a hard working, industrious woman, always attentive to her home duties, working, hand in hand with her husband to provide the necessities of life for a large family and bearing patiently the hardships experienced by the pioneers of the country. She leaves to mourn her loss: Frank Novak of Belleville, John Novak of Higler, Nebr., Mrs. Svoboda of Cuba, Mrs. J. H. Novak of Clay Center, Mrs. Charles Trecek of Cuba, Mrs. Rudolph Popelka of Belleville, Mrs. Julia Smahel of Belleville. Thirty-seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. The funeral was held from St. Edward's church on Thursday morning and conducted by Father McKenna. After the services at the church the body was laid to rest by the side of her husband in the new Catholic Cemetery east of town.
